Unidentified Rosy Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Beach Prompts Fears of Likely Phytoplankton Proliferation
Authorities in Tasmania are working to identify a rosy sludge that has surfaced on a isolated coast, with certain experts worried it could be an algal bloom.
Widespread Occurrence Across Shore
The pink-tinged sludge was found on a section of a southern bay about 60km south of Hobart. A like substance has also been noted on sections of a nearby shore and a separate bay.
Specimens Collected for Analysis
Examples have been gathered and provided to the environmental agency for analysis. A official commented that "algal blooms are a natural occurrence in response to changes in food sources, temperature, rain or illumination".
"These blooms are sometimes called red or pink tides because the proliferations can turn the water red," the representative said. "Few algae outbreaks are toxic, with many species serving as a key source of food for creatures in the marine food web."
"The usual source of reddish water in local waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce bioluminescent light displays at night."
Rising Frequency Connected to Global Warming
Algae outbreaks occur naturally but their occurrence has risen in recent years, partially due to global warming and pollution that combine to create nutrient-rich waters ideal for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that typically act as the ocean's waste processors. During a bloom, there is a quick expansion in their colonies that disrupts the normal functioning of ecosystems.
These occurrences have been compared to subsurface wildfires and can continue to grow as long as circumstances are favorable. In worse situations, vulnerable aquatic environments can be wiped out as sea creatures is destroyed or deprived of oxygen, providing more nutrients for the proliferation.
Previous Devastating Outbreak in another region
South Australia in the past confronted a severe phytoplankton proliferation along its southern shore after a string of oceanic warm spells, which spread across thousands of square kilometres. The event resulted in surfers with eye irritation and persistent coughs and may have killed up to a quarter-million sea creatures across 400 different species, according to agency assessments.
Expert Opinion on the Tasmanian Situation
An estuarine ecologist, who assisted in examining the start of South Australia's outbreak commented, based on pictures of the local event, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"We have seen lots of these events around Tassie of late," she said.
The expert said the algae did not generate poisons like the species involved in the previous harmful event, but it does consume tiny creatures and "numerous fish eggs", meaning marine life were most at risk.
"Typically one notices a proliferation of this algae after a proliferation of another organism, or an event such as a marine breeding," she added.
Demands for Action and Public Safety
A campaigner, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in the state, commented it seemed the suspected bloom had "expanded greatly" and proposed the fish farming business was the probable cause, referring to similar cases overseas.
"Therefore we needs to deliver a clear message here, the government and the environmental agency need to react to this. We need to examine the specimens we've taken and we need to inform the people here," she stated.
She said she had anxieties for people's well-being after feeling a prickling feeling along her arms and face while being splashed with tainted seawater.
Reports of Lifeless Sea Creatures and Demands for Official Response
An advocacy organization has stated dead octopus and expired organisms washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist calling the situation as an "natural disaster" and demanding the local leader to inspect and "assume command the reaction that government must be undertaking".
"He needs to understand this is a disaster in the making, financially as well as environmentally."

Addressing reporters, the official stated he was did not know of any relationships between the event and the salmon industry, stating laboratory analysis was required before judgments could be drawn.
"We need to ensure our rivers and seas are safe for nature and sustainable," he added.
"Our coastal assets across the state are our resources and we need to make sure the people and our economy can operate side-by-side to utilize our aquatic resources productively and in a lasting way."
